About This Webinar
Raman spectroscopy, a technique predicted in 1923 and discovered in 1928, has revolutionized scientists’ understanding of the molecular world by measuring and quantifying vibrational frequencies. As a non-destructive testing (NDT) method, it is invaluable across various sectors, including pharmaceuticals, biomedicine, petrochemicals, and food quality control. Despite its widespread use, a primary challenge remains: the inherently weak signal from Stokes-Raman scattering. Enhancing this signal typically requires either more powerful lasers or extended collection times, but practical limitations often necessitate highly sensitive optical spectrometers.

This talk explores the foundational principles behind the design and manufacturing of optical spectrometers for Raman spectroscopy and similar low-light applications. Sterobo addresses various design approaches, comparing conventional reflective gratings against alternatives like volume phase holographic (VPH) and surface-relief transmission (SRT) gratings. His discussion also highlights strategies for optimizing spectrometer performance, taking into account the entire Raman system design, from light source to detector.

The journey through spectrometer design culminates in understanding how these elements integrate to create a device that not only meets the required performance criteria but also ensures stability and reliability. By embracing innovative design principles and technologies, scientists continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in Raman spectroscopy, opening doors to new discoveries and advancements in multiple fields.
