Maximizing Payback: Translating Project Goals into Equipment Specifications

Presented by: Sofia Moreno, Zaber Technologies

Positioning equipment offers a quick path to automation, but the options can be overwhelming. How do you start narrowing down the choices?

The first step is to prioritize your automation goals and then translate them into system requirements. There are four core reasons to automate: (1) increase efficiency, (2) grow in scale, (3) improve quality, or (4) make a task safer. Understanding these helps define the payback and characterizes what specifications will affect that.

For example, in industrial biology and research, imaging throughput is a critical performance metric. Goals of automation could include capturing more data to improve quality for researchers or shortening experiment duration to increase efficiency for screening facilities. In each case, their automation goal would generate a different set of positioning requirements.

Moreno highlights three key areas to help viewers begin the process:
  1. How to prioritize your goals for automating any process.
  2. How to turn application priorities into product specifications, using specific examples.
  3. What support to look for from motion control suppliers.
