Broadband Thermal Imaging: The Future Is Now

Presented by: Jason Liebert, LightPath Technologies

For years, industry has largely dismissed the idea of broadband sensing, particularly mid-wave infrared (MWIR), using an uncooled infrared microbolometer sensor. The prevailing belief has been that it simply can't be done — but why does this perception persist?

In this presentation, Liebert explores the key challenges that have historically limited broadband MWIR sensing in uncooled microbolometers and, more importantly, why overcoming these barriers is now within reach.

The presentation examines the technical and practical factors that have shaped industry skepticism and highlights the potential advantages of achieving this capability. By addressing these critical questions, Liebert aims to provide new insights into the future of uncooled infrared imaging and its expanding possibilities.

About the presenter
Jason LiebertJason Liebert is the general manager of the Visimid Division at LightPath Technologies, which he joined in 2023 following LightPath’s acquisition of Visimid Technologies, a company he founded and led for 10 years. He oversees the engineering design center for thermal imaging and night vision electronics, where his team specializes in infrared and night vision imaging systems, including focal plane arrays, electronics, and video processing algorithms.

Before founding Visimid, he worked as an applications engineer at L3 Infrared Products. He also held roles as a systems engineer and IPT Lead at DRS, where he contributed to the repair and development of multi-spectral imaging products, and at Raytheon, where he supported thermal weapon sight products. Liebert holds a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Purdue University, an M.S. in systems engineering from Texas Tech University, and is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the state of Texas.
