Adjustable Ring Mode Welding: Novel E-Mobility Laser Solution for Demanding Battery Production Applications

The boom in e-mobility manufacturing is driving a significant increase in the demand for copper and aluminum welding solutions. However, these materials are challenging to weld with traditional fiber lasers due to low laser absorptivity and high material cooling rates. One novel approach uses a fiber laser configuration characterized by a center beam embedded within a ring beam. This fiber laser technology, known as adjustable ring mode (ARM), provides independent control of each beam, allowing for highly accurate control of keyhole dynamics during welds. Jean-Philippe Lavoie explains how ARM fiber lasers can help solve key challenges in battery welding applications while scaling up battery production. He will also share best practices in improving product design to maximize compatibility with ARM laser systems.

About the presenter
Jean-Philippe Lavoie, Ph.D., earned a doctorate in physics from Laval University in 2010. Following his doctoral work, he held a product introduction engineer position at Coherent, Inc. In 2012, he joined Coherent’s Santa Clara laser applications group as an application engineer, during which time he worked on the development of customer-based laser applications. He currently manages Coherent’s North American applications lab and oversees the development of strategic laser applications which address market demand for laser solutions for challenging materials.
