LEDs: Expanding Capabilities for Live Cell Imaging

Presented by: Isabel Goodhand, CoolLED

The light source of a widefield fluorescence microscope is often overlooked by scientists setting out to capture fast cellular processes with live cell imaging. But LEDs have changed the game.

Isabel Goodhand explains how innovations such as multi-wavelength switching and TTL triggering enable speeds faster than 7 µs, even without expensive motorized components. Because another important factor to consider for high-speed imaging is the optical filter configuration, Goodhand also shows how multi-band filters can balance speed and contrast requirements.

About the presenter
Isabel GoodhandIsabel Goodhand, Ph.D., is Technical Content Specialist at CoolLED. She completed her doctorate in 2011 at the University of Portsmouth, UK, where she developed a method to quantify protein-DNA binding activity. After leaving academia, she has since specialized in scientific communications across the science and engineering sectors. She joined CoolLED as Technical Content Specialist in 2019 and now helps to keep microscopy communities up-to-date with the latest developments in LED microscopy illumination.
