Multiscale Modeling and Optimization in Photonic Devices

Presented by: Rustu Umut Tok, COMSOL Inc.

Two challenging problems of photonic device modeling are addressed in this talk: multiscale modeling and optimization. When it comes to modeling an optically large system with subwavelength features, a multiscale simulation scheme is required. In other words, a simulation tool should be able to provide both the interaction of light at subwavelength scale and the propagation of light over large distances.

Rustu Umut Tok of COMSOL first demonstrates a multiscale simulation scheme—a special type of multiphysics simulation—which combines full-wave and ray optics approaches. Tok then provides an overview on optimization, another important aspect of photonic device simulation, with an introduction to both gradient-based and derivative-free optimization approaches.

About the presenter
Rustu Umut TokRustu Umut Tok, Ph.D., joined COMSOL in 2011 as a senior applications engineer specializing in radio frequency (RF) and wave optics. He holds a bachelor’s degree in physics, a master’s degree in biomedical engineering, and doctorate in mechatronics engineering. After receiving his doctorate, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Electrical Engineering Department, where he was involved in research projects advancing the studies of electromagnetics and optics.
