Next-Generation Thin-Film Filters for Fluorescence Imaging and Diagnostics

In research microscopy and cellular imaging, advanced filters enable tighter discrimination, reduced autofluorescence, and improved signal-to-noise, supporting deeper multiplexing and more reliable quantitation. Clinical diagnostics and bioanalytical platforms rely on robust, manufacturable filter sets to ensure consistent performance across large installed bases and demanding environments, helping researchers and engineers develop better tools.
This presentation highlights recent advances in thin film optical filter design and manufacturing that directly address these needs, including ultra steep edges for sharper spectral separation, high transmission passbands for improved assay sensitivity, and broadband blocking to suppress crosstalk in multi-channel instruments. Emphasis is placed on how these innovations in coating processes, layer design, and substrate engineering translate into lower background, better limit of detection, and enhanced reproducibility across varying sample types and system architectures.
By connecting device-level optical performance to system-level metrics such as throughput, multiplexing capability, and clinical robustness, this work demonstrates how next-generation visible-range filters are enabling more powerful fluorescence microscopy, more sensitive clinical diagnostics, and more flexible bioanalytical platforms for emerging life science and healthcare applications, making the advances highly relevant and trustworthy for the audience.
About the presenter
Craig Hanson is product manager for optical components at MKS Instruments in Rochester, New York. He holds a bachelor of science degree in economics from the University of Utah. He started his career in the photonics industry, supporting optical filters and coatings more than 20 years ago at CVI Laser Optics. Hanson has served in roles ranging from sales, application engineering, marketing, and product management. Throughout his career he has expanded the depth of his product knowledge of optical materials, optical components, and a variety of coating technologies.
