From Light to Insight: The Rise of Ultra Compact Spectrometers in Real World Sensing

Optical spectroscopy is entering a new era. As sensing technologies become smaller, smarter, and manufacturable at scale, ultra compact spectrometers are emerging as a foundational platform for material and metabolic intelligence. This session examines the breakthroughs enabling this shift and compares leading approaches across performance, manufacturability, and system level readiness.

Choi will highlight rapidly expanding opportunities in material detection, lighting, color/QC, bioimaging, and metabolic monitoring, including emerging applications such as noninvasive glucose sensing. He will also introduce Chemical AI; a new intelligence layer he initiated that transforms spectral data into actionable material and metabolic insights. Additional integration pathways will be explored across wearables, smart glasses, and high-tech domains such as in situ plasma monitoring for semiconductor processes and wavelength drift monitoring in advanced AI data centers.

The talk concludes with a forward-looking assessment of how ultra-compact spectroscopy will evolve alongside advances in microfabrication, single-photon detection, and multispectral imaging — and how these trends will unlock the next decade of spectral intelligence.


About the presenter
Bill ChoiBill Choi is the founder and CEO of nanoLambda, the company that created the new category of ultra compact spectral sensing. Choi has spent the past two decades transforming spectroscopy from a laboratory instrument into a scalable, embedded technology platform — enabling spectral intelligence to live inside everyday devices, wearables, smart glasses, industrial systems, and emerging metabolic sensors. He also initiated Chemical AI, a breakthrough intelligence layer that converts spectral signatures into actionable material and metabolic insights, redefining how machines perceive and interpret the physical world.

Before founding nanoLambda, Choi spent 17 years at Samsung Electronics in Korea and the United States, leading engineering, product strategy, and global business initiatives. He later headed Asia operations at AcceLight Networks, a U.S. optical networking startup. Choi holds a physics degree from Seoul National University and an MBA from Carnegie Mellon University. His work centers on building the future of spectral intelligence — making it accessible, manufacturable, and foundational to the next wave of sensing technologies.
