Frequency Comb Solutions for the Quantum 2.0 Revolution

Thomas Quenzel, Menlo SystemsThe advent of the Quantum 2.0 revolution places new demands on photonic technologies, requiring unprecedented levels of stability, precision, and scalability. Optical frequency combs provide a unique solution to these challenges, offering phase-coherent links between optical and microwave domains, high-resolution spectroscopy capabilities, and timing precision at the femtosecond scale. In this context, frequency combs enable critical functionalities for emerging quantum technologies, including quantum communication, quantum sensing, and the development of optical clocks. This contribution presents recent advances in the design and implementation of optical frequency combs, highlighting their critical role as enabling technologies for the realization of scalable, modular, and versatile architectures in trapped-ion and neutral-atom quantum computing.
By providing phase-coherent optical references across broad spectral ranges, frequency combs facilitate precise qubit control, high-fidelity interconnects between disparate quantum systems, and the synchronization required for complex multi-qubit operations, thereby addressing fundamental challenges in the development of large-scale, distributed quantum information platforms.
About the presenter
Thomas Quenzel, Ph.D., obtained his bachelor of science in photonics from the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer, followed by a master of science in engineering physics from the University of Oldenburg. He continued his academic career at the University of Oldenburg, where he earned his doctorate in Physics with a research focus on nonlinear amplifier design for the investigation of ultrafast dynamics between short-lived quasi-particles.
In 2023, Quenzel joined Menlo Systems GmbH as product manager for optical frequency combs, overseeing the development and strategic positioning of leading high precision photonic technologies for various applications. Since 2024, he has additionally served as product manager for quantum laser solutions, contributing to the advancement and commercialization of state-of-the-art laser technologies for applications in quantum science.
