From Bilinear Through Prism to Hyperspectral: Finding the Right Balance

Presented by: Mihály Baki, JAI

The presentation explores the practical trade-offs between three key machine vision technologies used in industrial inspection and sorting: trilinear (bilinear), prism-based multispectral, and grating-based hyperspectral imaging. As imaging demands evolve toward more intelligent and data-rich solutions, selecting the right technology requires balancing spectral and spatial resolution with system complexity and cost. This presentation compares these modalities across parameters such as spectral coverage, resolution, data throughput, and integration effort.

Trilinear cameras offer simplicity for color-based applications, and prism-based multispectral systems enable high throughput and spectral accuracy with more spectral bands. Hyperspectral solutions provide unparalleled spectral detail, ideal for advanced sorting or scientific use cases, though at higher cost and complexity. Through real-world examples and a concise comparison framework, attendees will gain practical guidance to support technology selection tailored to their application needs and performance targets.
