Optical Components Drive Biomedical Research and Treatment
Presented by:
Craig Hanson, MKS InstrumentsThe integration of optical filters, diffraction gratings, and replicated mirrors are key to the utility of optical instruments utilized in biomedicine and life science research. Filters enable precise fluorescence detection in samples and enable Raman spectroscopy for molecular analysis. Gratings power spectrometers and hyperspectral imaging, ensuring high-speed, high-resolution biological sample analysis that is vital for image-guided surgery. Lightweight replicated mirrors support compact optical systems such as endoscopes or ophthalmic devices for diagnostics and imaging.
These components drive advances in bioimaging, biosensing, and therapeutic monitoring, addressing healthcare challenges. The talk explores how innovation in component selection and configuration accelerates progress in biotechnology, shaping a future of accessible precision health and early disease detection.
About the presenter
Craig Hanson is product manager for optical components at MKS Instruments in Rochester, New York. He holds a bachelor of science degree in economics from the University of Utah. He started his career in the photonics industry, supporting optical filters and coatings more than 20 years ago at CVI Laser Optics. Hanson has served in roles ranging from sales, application engineering, marketing, and product management. Throughout his career he has expanded the depth of his product knowledge of optical materials, optical components, and a variety of coating technologies.
