Small VCSELs Drive a Growing Field of Applications

Presented by: Roman Körner, TRUMPF Photonic Components

VCSELs have increasingly become a fixture in smartphone and consumer electronic applications such as proximity sensing or face recognition, and recent advancements have only made these compact lasers smarter and added new functionalities. Some of these advancements include the integration of gratings to the VCSEL’s surface structure, the addition of monolithic micro-optics, and the integration of photodiode or multijunction features. Körner discusses the emerging technology toolbox available to VCSEL users and how it is enabling them to optimize designs for their application. He will further explore how these technical developments are influencing key design trends such as miniaturization.

About the presenter
Roman KörnerRoman Körner, Ph.D., studied electrical engineering in Stuttgart, where he completed his doctorate on the germanium Zener-emitter for silicon photonics. Körner works as head of device and technology development at TRUMPF Photonic Components and has a strong background in silicon state-of-the-art processing technology.
