Simultaneous Quality Inspection, Verification, and Precise Color Measurement of Marked Characters on Product Surfaces

Presented by: Ashley Faloon, Radiant Vision Systems

For many electronic products sold today, markings such as text, characters, and symbols are applied to component surfaces via laser or other methods. Product makers must ensure that any markings are free of defects, meet quality and brand standards, and comply with trade regulations such as CE and RoHS. This conference presentation will cover visual inspection approaches, including a new method using imaging colorimetry to provide efficient automated simultaneous inspection of text and symbols to measure precise color, dimensions and positioning, formation, and other attributes.

The challenges of detecting defects and ensuring the quality and legibility of markings on product surfaces such as metal, plastic, glass, and ceramic will all be discussed and the full range of criteria that manufacturers need to assess, including text/symbol shape (inclusions and exclusions), dimensions, placement/orientation, color, and contrast will be provided.

Faloon highlights various methods used for quality inspection of markings on product surfaces, such as machine vision cameras and spectrometers, and their advantages and drawbacks. Lastly, she will explain how the science of imaging colorimetry can be applied to perform defect detection and color inspection of markings with greater precision and efficiency

About the presenter
Ashley FaloonAshley Faloon, Ph.D., is a senior software development engineer at Radiant Vision Systems. She has worked in the field of imaging technology for more than sixteen years in the academic, commercial, and public/military sectors. Her experience ranges from leading the development of radar, IR, and electronic simulation modeling software to digital signal processing systems for seismic data. She was a key member of a team that achieved ISO 17025:2017 certification for calibration of 2D imaging photometry and colorimetry systems. She earned a doctorate in physics from McGill University.
