Miniaturized Hyperspectral Imaging Helps Visualize Cellular Dynamics
Presented by:
William Yang Terziyan, BaySpecHyperspectral imaging is widely used for generating high-resolution data cubes which contain images of the 2D physical dimensions, and the spectral fingerprints of the 2D physical areas, as the third dimension. These data-rich imaging capabilities reveal the spatial distribution of the chemical compounds in the targets in a non-contact, non-invasive, non-destructive manner. A miniaturized snapshot hyperspectral imager offers advantages of non-moving parts and operates in confined spaces, becoming an ideal tool for intrinsic molecular/cellular visualization, and solutions for biological, biomedical and medical-related studies.
Ultra-miniature (<2 in x 1.5 in) snapshot hyperspectral imagers can cover 400 nm-1100 nm. This development has enabled biological and medical researchers to demonstrate the strong potential of snapshot imaging for a wide range of biomedical and biosensing applications, from non-invasive diagnosis of skin diseases, wound assessments/monitoring therapy effects, plus large-area tissue sensing, and cell detections through integration of the snapshot imagers as attachments with biological microscopes.
About the presenter
William Yang Terziyan has over 27 years of professional experience managing complex projects to solve real-world optical design, engineering, and manufacturing problems. He holds three degrees in laser physics, electro-optics, and laser spectroscopy (University of Waterloo, Tianjin University). After obtaining his degrees, he had served in various photonics related companies focused on laser and optical instrumentation/development (Leica, Thermawave, KLA Tencor), before becoming the founder of BaySpec, Inc. in 2000.
At BaySpec, Terziyan led the development and commercialization of many disruptive photonics technologies, starting with development of high precision wavelength monitoring devices in the beginning of the fiber optical networks, and expanding into developments in fiber Bragg gratings spectral integrators, miniature Raman spectroscopy, portable mass spectrometry, hyperspectral imaging, and other photonics and optical based techniques and products. He has worked in diverse industries such as analytical instrumentation, semiconductors, telecom, fiber sensing, biomedical, and medical devices.
He is an inventor of more than 36 issued U.S. patents related to photonics techniques, and a creator of more than nine product lines based on photonics technologies.
