Most LED vendors provide optical simulation models (a.k.a. ray files) for their LEDs. Unfortunately, however, very many of these ray files are not in a ready-to-use state. This talk shows what optical designers can do to turn these mediocre ray files into something that we can use readily and reliably.
Muschaweck will use LightTools optical simulation software to demonstrate the method, but the method is generic: The very same steps towards a high-quality model can be taken in any other illumination optics design/simulation software.
About the presenter
Julius Muschaweck, a German physicist, has been working on optical design for illumination for over 30 years. After a stay as visiting scholar at the University of Chicago with professor Roland Winston, well known as the originator of Nonimaging Optics, for research on concentrating on sunlight, he co-founded and became CEO of OEC. OEC was a unique illumination optics research institute plus optical engineering service that pioneered tailoring freeform optics for illumination.
Later, at OSRAM, the LED maker, where he held the position of senior principal key expert, the highest rank in the Siemens/OSRAM expert career, he coordinated over 100 optical designers within OSRAM worldwide. He then joined ARRI, the leading movie camera and lamp head maker, as principal optical scientist.
Muschaweck now works as an independent consultant and author, teaching courses on illumination optics, mentoring younger colleagues, writing textbooks and designing illumination optics for industry clients.
He is the author of two textbooks on illumination optics, over 45 scientific papers, and the inventor of 60 patent applications. He is a Fellow of SPIE and an Optica Senior Member.
