Multiphoton microscopy asks optical filters to do something no other fluorescence technique asks: reject high-powered pulsed near-infrared light while passing visible photons. This presentation walks the detection path of a multiphoton system and identifies the specification decisions that most often limit image quality, including blocking depth and blocking range across a tunable source, angle of incidence effects in scanned detection, dichroic flatness and group delay dispersion in the excitation path, and channel placement for second and third harmonic signals.

Drawing on filter selection work with multiphoton labs and instrument builders, Kinoshita reviews the specifications worth confirming before ordering a filter, and the cases where a stock part will not do the job.
