Numerical Simulations of Optical Spectroscopy and Photonic Devices

Presented by: Tom Chen, COMSOL Inc.

Accelerating development of photonic devices and optical spectroscopy techniques, from the low-frequency RF/microwave regime to the high-frequency optical regime, have led to exciting and widespread applications in both academia and industry. Designing and optimizing a new prototype requires a fast, accurate, and versatile numerical simulation tool to characterize device behavior without actual experimental measurements. Chen presents a discussion on using multiphysics simulation tools with popular photonics applications, such as metamaterials and photonic crystals. He also demonstrates how to simulate the spectroscopic behavior of a photonic device and efficiently optimize its performance.
