On-Chip Laser Integration (NIR & MIR) for Spectrometers

Presented by: Sandeep Battula, Qualivon Technologies Pvt

Recent developments in on-chip spectrometers, driven by the increased efficiency of end applications enabled by on-chip components, have highlighted the need for compact, high-performance light sources. Significant advancements have been made in the integration of near-infrared (NIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) lasers on-chip, leveraging techniques such as heterogeneous integration (the use of various technologies and materials on the same platform) and semiconductor manufacturing.

However, existing designs often face challenges in balancing performance, size, and cost. Issues with thermal management, wavelength stability, and power consumption remain, limiting the widespread adoption of on-chip spectrometers. Despite these challenges, on-chip laser integration continues to hold promise for transforming applications into environmental monitoring, healthcare, and industrial process control. This presentation will examine ongoing work on on-chip integrated lasers with advanced features like NIR to MIR conversion to reduce the overall cost of integration.

About the presenter
Sandeep BattulaSandeep Battula is the co-founder and a visionary leader at Qualivon Technologies Pvt Ltd, a fabless semiconductor design company driving innovation in silicon photonics for environmental and industrial applications. A leading expert in integrated semiconductor laser systems, Battula's current work focuses on developing compact, high-performance on-chip light sources for next-generation NIR and MIR spectrometers. His research addresses critical challenges in thermal management, wavelength stability, and power efficiency to enable scalable, cost-effective sensing platforms.

Battula has recently led the design of a multiwavelength laser source for on-chip spectroscopy and is now pioneering a triple-comb laser architecture tailored for silicon and quantum photonic systems. Recognized globally for his contributions to sustainable technologies, Sandeep was awarded the prestigious Leaders in Innovation Fellowship (LIF) by the Royal Academy of Engineering, UK. At Qualivon, he continues to push the boundaries of photonic integration to advance real-time monitoring in healthcare, environmental sensing, and space-based platforms.
