About This Webinar
Ryan Shelton presents a reengineering of OCT technology for production of a hand-held tool that for the first time enables objective, quantitative, and noninvasive assessment of middle ear infections — the leading cause of hearing loss, surgeries, and antibiotic use in children. The current gold standard has an accuracy rate of only 50%, resulting in poor outcomes and treatment strategies. An OCT-enabled scope that looks directly at the disease could show potential as a vast improvement over the current standard of care. Shelton discusses OCT-enabled device design and operation, as well as the potential for further development. In addition, he shares his experiences with commercializing university-developed technology and his move from academia to the startup world. He will share knowledge that may be interesting to others who are pursuing similar paths.

***This presentation premiered during the 2021 Photonics Spectra Conference Biomedical track. For information on upcoming Photonics Media events, see our event calendar here.

About the presenter:
Ryan Shelton, Ph.D.Ryan Shelton, Ph.D., is CEO and founder of PhotoniCare, a medical device company that has developed a hand-held imaging platform that uses light to see through tissue. PhotoniCare's first product is a hand-held device that can see through the eardrum to enable physicians to make better decisions about antibiotic and surgical intervention. Shelton has led the company as CEO since its inception, raising over $15 million in venture capital. He received a doctorate in bioengineering from Texas A&M University in 2012. He serves as chair of the Champaign-Urbana CEO Roundtable and has won multiple awards for entrepreneurial and technical achievement. Shelton is passionate about PhotoniCare's current efforts toward improving the management of chronic middle ear infections in children because of the frustrations he's faced as a parent of children dealing with these infections and the resulting hearing loss.
